An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number that assists foreign taxpayers in filing a tax return with the IRS.
Unlike many other forms of identification, an ITIN is solely used for tax purposes.
The main reasons for applying for an ITIN include the following:
· You need to file a US Tax return (e.g. Form 1040 or 1040-NR)
· You have received US Sourced Income
· You are a Non-Resident Spouse or Dependent of a US Citizen or Resident
· You are making a claim for a US tax refund (e.g. reclaiming US taxes withheld on dividends or royalties)
· You have a US Bank or Investment account
· You have sold (or intend to sell) US Real Estate
An ITIN does not qualify you for Social Security benefits or authorise work in the U.S.
IRS Approved Certifying Acceptance Agent
A Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) is a person who is authorized by the IRS to help taxpayers obtain an ITIN.
Albury & Co is one of the few UK based approved IRS ITIN CAA’s and as such is authorised by the IRS to verify the ID documentation required to support an individual’s application for an ITIN. (The IRS no longer accepts notarised copies of identity documents.)
Albury & Co can then issue a Form W-7 (officially known as a W-7 Certificate of Accuracy) to the IRS authenticating foreign identity documents.
Advantages of using a CAA
Using a CAA eliminates the need to submit original documents to the IRS to process an ITIN application (which can take 7 to 11 weeks for non-US based persons).
If you cannot attend our office for a face-to-face meeting, we can provide video link services to observe the documents to be certified however please note that for all video calls, we are required to have the ID documents mailed to us. This is a requirement under our agreement with the IRS. All documents will be mailed back securely.
